Sasek, Miroslav – Sampan Living

Watercolour with pen and ink, originally for ‘This is Hong Kong’ (1965). The word ‘sampan’ (or ‘舢舨’ for those who are able) derives from the original Cantonese term for a boat – ‘sam pan’ meaning ‘three planks’. Many Sampans include a small shelter and even today are used as permanent places of abode for a few in Hong Kong.
