Lill Tschudi - Fixing the Wires

Lill Tschudi - Fixing the Wires

Description:

Linocut (1932). Printed from 3 blocks in Black; Greyish Beige; Light Blue. Original image size: 30.2 x 20.2cm. Tschudi was not yet twenty-one when she created ‘Fixing the Wires’. Flight, her tutor, was so impressed by this print that he used it to illustrate the techniques of linocutting in his book The Art and Craft of Lino Cutting and Printing (1934); he also commends what she creates from her chosen subject-matter: 'We who view the print' he writes, 'find a commonplace subject translated in such a manner that we receive from it a new way of viewing a certain aspect of nature' (p52). He was not alone in finding this an exceptional print: both the V&A and the British Museum bought ‘Fixing the Wires’ very soon after it was first exhibited.

Size: 33.0 x 22.0; paper 48.3 x 33.0cm.
