Power, Cyril - Skaters (Click to enlarge)
Description
Linocut (c. 1932). Original image size: 19.8 x 31.6cm. Printed from 3 blocks: spectrum red; light cobalt blue and viridian. In the 1920s and ‘30’s Sonja Henie, the Norwegian figure skater, rose to fame. She first won the World Championship in 1927, and continued to win for the next nine successive years; she then won gold in the Winter Olympics, and again in the two subsequent Olympic games. She was in part trained by a ballet instructor, and with her dancer’s abilities and high cut skirts she hugely increased the popularity of the sport. Power was influenced by Sonja Henie. In this print he clearly delights in the gracefulness of his skaters, in their balletic posture but also in their fashionable attire.
